A residential extension project for a young family of six in Brighton, an urban coastal suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. The family required a calm, non-fussy space with robust materials and furnishings while not compromising on style.
Whiting Architects adopted an ‘architectural’ approach to the interiors called a ‘process of discovery’. The goal is to not reveal everything at once, but rather offer glimpses as you work your way through and around a collection of box forms that have been inserted into the space. The boxes conceal, reveal and wrap load-bearing structure. Colour was used cleverly throughout to brighten and identify elements and create interest. Long gestures were created to accentuate a quality of space and create focal points.
Storage solutions form part of the architecture and interior design and the decorative elements followed this language. Shelving with leather straps and timber hooks sit within the project comfortably, and colour is replicated in soft furnishings to complement the main palette. Hints of watermelon are included throughout including in the children’s bathroom and play areas.
The architects have encouraged differing qualities of space from small & intimate to high volume pitched volumes. It is fitted with the right amount of custom made and procured joinery & furniture. Everything is considered and designed. Intended as a backdrop for how the owners live their lives.
