This beloved Calistoga Residence was a ground-up new build for a couple who asked Wade Design to create a new, modern farmhouse style home that would clearly speak to the property’s natural surroundings. In response, the team designed a series of wood-clad, gabled structures that are set around courtyards and terraces.
The compound consists of a main dwelling, a guesthouse, a pool house and a garage for storing classic cars with a second-floor yoga and Pilates studio. The one-story main residence was designed to connect with nature. The resulting retreat is serene, clean and modern yet still remains a warm, inviting and restful home.
“The design is focused on the view, and the house seems to lead you outside,” Luke Wade says.
All of the structures sit along an east-west axis, allowing for extensive views of the scenic terrain to the north. Large windows welcome daylight and provide an intimate connection to the vineyard landscape.
The layout provides for a series of chambers with breezeway portals opening to a large terrace overlooking the vistas. An outdoor room cleverly embedded in the terrace is the heart of the home, and includes built-in insect screens, a gas fire pit and heaters for cooler nights.
Aesthetically, the aim was serenity through sparseness, with architecture and interior elements knitted to a point of seamless authorship. Deference to the natural surroundings guided choices for materials – stained wood beams harkening back to the building’s exterior, a grid of exterior stone running uninterrupted straight indoors, and thin profiled steel doors and windows providing ample light and a contrasting focal point in this ethereal home’s design.
